Some golf courses are built.
A few are engineered.
But only a handful are imagined — shaped by a mind that saw fairways as canvases and greens as brushstrokes.
Bay Valley is one of those rare places.
When world‑renowned golf course architect Desmond Muirhead designed Bay Valley in 1973, he didn’t simply route 18 holes across the landscape — he crafted an experience. Muirhead, known globally for his bold creativity and expressive shaping, designed courses worldwide and helped pioneer the modern concept of golf‑centered communities. His work blended strategy, art, symbolism, and storytelling in ways few architects dared to attempt.
And in the entire state of Michigan, there is only one Muirhead design:
Bay Valley.
Here, his artistic fingerprints are unmistakable. The course unfolds in sweeping curves, sculpted bunkers, and strategic angles that challenge the mind as much as the swing. Every hole feels like a chapter — a moment of discovery, a test of creativity, a chance to see the game through the eyes of a visionary.
But Bay Valley’s beauty isn’t just in its artistry — it’s in its playability for golfers of all levels.
Bay Valley features five sets of tees, offering a welcoming experience for beginners while still challenging the most seasoned players. From the championship tees, the course stretches to 6,661 yards, playing as a par 71 with a course rating of 72.2 and a slope of 131. More novice players are welcome to play at yardages that match their ability.
This range of teeing options ensures that every golfer — from juniors to seniors, from casual players to competitive travelers — can experience the course the way Muirhead intended: with joy, strategy, and a sense of adventure.
Playing Bay Valley is stepping into the imagination of one of golf’s most innovative architects. It’s a chance to walk fairways shaped by a designer who believed golf should evoke emotion, spark creativity, and leave a lasting impression.
For architecture enthusiasts, for golfers who chase unique experiences, and for travelers seeking something truly special, Bay Valley offers a rare opportunity:
to play the only Desmond Muirhead course in Michigan — a living piece of golf art.
Come walk the story he left behind.
Come experience Bay Valley.

This past year marked the first major step in our long-term improvement plan for Bay Valley. We completed the initial phase of the irrigation overhaul, which included installing over 100 new sprinklers, upgrading multiple pieces of turf equipment, and implementing a full RainBird irrigation control system. These upgrades have already made a substantial difference in course playability and consistency.
Over the winter months the golf shop has been being renovated with new bathrooms, counter, wrap around deck that will feature food and beverage service and more! Alongside these course and experience upgrades, all members will also receive:
A 7 day golf membership

Dear Friends and Golfers,
I’m honored to introduce myself as the new Director of Golf at Bay Valley Resort. As a PGA Member for over 25 years, specialty certified in Golf Operations, I’ve dedicated my career to growing the game and enriching the lives of those who play it. Over my lifetime, positions as PGA Head Professional at Celebration Golf Club in Orlando, Florida, Mount Pleasant Country Club in Mt Pleasant, Indian River Golf Club in Michigan, and Director of Operations at the YMCA of Saginaw have given me perspective, insight, and a passion to serve that I will bring to Bay Valley. I currently serve on the Board of Directors for the Michigan PGA and proudly chair the Growth of the Game Committee — roles that reflect my commitment to expanding access, opportunity, and engagement across our sport.
Over the years, I’ve been humbled to receive the Michigan PGA Growth of the Game Award in 2018, 2019, 2020, and 2025. I’ve also had the privilege of managing and leading the largest PGA Jr. League program in Michigan for the past three seasons — a testament to the power of youth golf and the joy it brings to families. One of the most meaningful parts of my journey has been supporting and coaching veterans through the PGA HOPE (Helping Our Patriots Everywhere) program. These experiences have shaped my belief that golf is more than a game — it’s a community, a source of healing, and a way to create lasting memories.
Bay Valley holds a special place in my heart. I have fond memories of walking this course with my late father, moments that helped spark my lifelong love of golf. The Great Lakes Bay region is where that passion took root. And as life would have it, Bay Valley is also where I met my wife — she was part of the sales team here 25 years ago. This resort has been woven into some of the most important chapters of my life, and returning now feels both meaningful and full circle.
Today, I’m proud to be part of the revitalization team working to restore Bay Valley to its legacy. Even more special, I get to do it alongside my brother Ben, who serves as our Golf Course Grounds Superintendent. Together, we’re committed to honoring the history of this resort while building a future full of opportunity, connection, and pride.
I look forward to meeting all of you — those who already love Bay Valley and those who are yet to experience the revitalized programs, events, and community we’re building. From member offerings to family activities to resort-wide initiatives, we’re creating something truly special, and I can’t wait to share it with you.
See you on the tee.
Warm regards, Doug Temple, PGA Director of Golf Bay Valley Resort
